Greetings! Use this database to search by any keyword. I tried to build something that would help us all without having to decipher a cruising guide for the “best place to park” or “where the local grocery is”. And, if you have an entry to add, please add it here!

Franeker

Parking/Passenthaven

In addition to street mooring on the Alde Trekfeart, you can moor in the Franeker Watersport Vereniging, which is a small marina just west of the Stationsbrug as you are entering Franeker.... Mostly sail slips but we were welcomed in our 12.75 motoryacht....note that open boxes are denoted with a green symbol...we were near water and power, and our shore power didn't quite reach and they offered an extension cord. There is 1 private shower and separate/private toilet for each dames and herens... Both are free. You have to push the shower button 8 million times to finish your shower, but hey it's free. And private. Mooring was about €20 per night. A bit of a walk to city center but totally doable

We saw 2 Poiesz's and there are many stores here....in addition to basics (Hema, Blokker, Action, etc there are some nice boutiques, and art gallery, a "junk" store which looked pretty cool), and of course the Planetarium

We ate at Hotel & Restaurant De Stadsherberg, which was lovely and the food was delicious....you can eat outside along a smaller boat canal, or inside - which looked like very nice ambiance:)

Sneek

Bathroom/Shower

BV Sneeker Jachthaven....very quiet and a few slips for bigger (12+m) boats in the inner harbor....very protected if weather gets windy etc ... Bathrooms are close to bigger slips...no hand soap in ladies room, but showers are clean and efficient.... Watch out for harbormaster restocking the toilet paper in the morning, if you are using the toilet!😂 #awkard!😂

Water is very near bigger slip locations in inner harbor...very tidy and well kept marina, near De Dompe marina

Nice walking paths nearby too. And just a stones throw to the Jumbo, Action, Aldi, Eatalia IC, and the butcher shop and many other Sneek Attractions:)

Zoutkamp

Bridge

If you are going to Zoutkamp from the Lauwersmeer, you will need to go through an open sluis/moving bridge to get to the downtown strip to park.

That bridge is a BUTTON BRIDGE (it's not obvious). The button is right underneath the "SPORT" sign, and it's quite high.

Otherwise, the bridge won't open.

Dokkum

Bathroom/Shower

As of 2024, the showers cost 50 cents for 4 minutes. And there is no toilet paper, so bring your own.

Alde Feanan

Parking/Passenthaven

This is a place in the Alde Feanan in the Grutte Krite. SO beautiful, highly recommend. There's 4-5 tieups for boats.

Once you are tied up, get off your boat and walk down the bushes to the left. There are blackberry brambles there. Beautiful and quiet.

Groningen

Parking/Passenthaven

The Oosterhaven in Groningen has 70 berths +/-, and a depth of 4 meters, so sailboats can dock here.

It is very convenient to Central Groningen (just a few blocks away).

Their is electricity and water on the dock (part of mooring fee). The breaker for the electricity is at the head of the dock and is well-labeled (once door is open). The outside is stainless steel / aluminum and is not labeled.

The Marine Chandlery that used to be right at the marina is no longer there.

A Jumbo is a few blocks away on the way to the city center. For some reason, this Jumbo would not take our credit or debit cards (others have).

The guided boat tour is not worth it as there are so many barges along the canals that you really can't see the buildings the guide is talking about and since he describes them in English last, the boat is already past what he is talking about by the time you hear the description and where to look.

The Harbor Cafe is a short distance from the marina and is a good place to sit outside and have drinks and food.

Krista is the Havenmaester and is very helpful.

Vollenhove

Museum

Cute little town. Not much to do but go to the ruins: Laan van Toutenburgh 1, 8325 AV Vollenhove

The ruins were the summer castle home of the Bishop of Utrecht in 900 or so. You can't get near the ruins, but it's quite beautiful.

Marina is a bit outdated, but ok. Electric is included as part of the harbor fee. You have to go to the harbormaster office to pay.

Definitely worth walking around this town. It's pretty.

Dokkum

Parking/Passenthaven

The electricity here is run by AanUIT app, so it's a whole different ball of wax. Get the app and then use it to start (AND DON'T FORGET TO STOP) your electric. You can pay for the evening with your AanUIT app also.

Steenwijk

Parking/Passenthaven

Meh. This town is a big town.

We parked in the canal near the address. Turn around before you park for the evening.

There's a nice Jumbo walking into town from the canal.

Koudum

Parking/Passenthaven

If you are passing through, you must park on one of the outer jetties.

This place works on SEP cards (see Blokzijl for how SEP cards work).

There are 2 public bathrooms here. You'll need to look at the map here to find them:
https://www.kuilart.nl/en/information/map/

This is a nice resort, excellent stop on the way to Stavoren.

Showers are 2 cents for 10 seconds, using the SEP card in teh shower.

If there is no wind, you will get swarmed by mosquitos at night.

The little market next to the Grand Cafe has pastries in the morning.

The SEP pay machine is opposite the market.

Blokzijl

Parking/Passenthaven

This is a beautiful inner harbor.

The public bathroom is at Kerkstraat 9, easy walk from other side of the harbor.

Everything here works off of a "SEP" card. I believe any SEP card will work, but money you put on one here will not work in another town. I used my Lemmer card to load stuff for Blokzijl.

The reload station (or where to buy a SEP card) is in a floating home in the middle of the dock.

Payment for your boat overnight is here too. You will get a sticker that you attach to your boat.

Showers are 3 cents every 10 seconds, but since it's using a SEP card to turn the showers on/off, just take as long as you want in there. The outer door to the showers opens without the SEP card (we got stuck here trying to figure out how to open the door), the SEP card works on the inside door.

Exit the lock first at the beginning of the day, or the line gets long to exit the lock.

Makkum

Bathroom/Shower

Public bathroom in Makkum is amazing. Excellent hot water.

1 push of button gets you 10 seconds. You'll need to get the thumb ready to push a lot.

Dokkum

Bridge

If you are going from Leeuwarden to Dokkum (a standard route), there are 2 tolls:

As of 2024:

3.50E for first bridge on way to Dokkum

5E for final bridge to get into center of Dokkum

Grou

Bathroom/Shower

This is a public bathroom in the Hellingshaven in Grou.

MUST BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER

Dokkum

Bathroom/Shower

Dokkum public bathroom, "Waterguis", is here.

As of 2024, 1E for a 4 minute shower. The bathrooms are clean here.

MUST BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER, hand soap, etc...

Dokkum

Garbage/Recycle

If you are parked between the windmills on the polder, you leave the garbage on the side of your boat and someone will come take it.

Franeker

Stores/Supplies

Interesting junk store of a bunch of Frisian stuff. We found stuff for the boat in here.

Franeker

Bathroom/Shower

The public bathroom is a bit of a walk from the gracht parking. It will take about 10 minutes from the furthest point on that canal to get to this building.

You will need a code (in 2024 it was 2023#).

Shower is free, but to get hot water it will cost you 50 cents.

Franeker

Parking/Passenthaven

Park on the Kromme Gracht in this town. Make sure you turn around before you call it a night so you can easily get out the next morning.

Franeker

Museum

They don't tell you this, but you can buy a combo museum pass that covers these museums:

Martena
Planetarium
Keets Museum

We can't recommend enough the Eisinga Planetarium. This dude built this planetarium in the ceiling of his living room in the 1700s. He was a sheep farmer. It's still accurate to this day. HIGHLY recommend this as a stop.

Grou

Grocery

This is an excellent grocery store in Grou.

BONUS that you can pull in at the docks BEHIND the grocery store right past the push button bridge on your left side. Excellent for that first provision you need when you get on the boat.

Stavoren

Laundry

This is inside of Marina Stavoren.

You have to get tokens from the front desk to do laundry. There are 2 washing machines and a huge dryer.

As of 2024, washer is 5E, dryer is 4E.

The washing machines have their own soap. You have to push the button behind the washing machine when you load it up before you start the washer.

Stavoren

Parking/Passenthaven

Marina Stavoren inside of the lock is an excellent place to park. Slightly pricey, but has excellent showers and laundry.

IJlst

Museum

De Rat working sawmill/windmill.

As of 2024, the cost to get in is 2E and it's worth it to see it. You get to climb to the top of a real windmill and see how it all works.
